Adhesive Substances A to Z: Identity, Function and Regulatory Status

Adhesive substances are the individual raw materials that industrial adhesives are formulated from, and this list gives each of the 120 substance pages its CAS number or identity type, its function in an adhesive and its family. Together these substances make up the adhesive chemicals behind every industrial adhesive.

The substances that bond parts together are the base polymers and thermoset resins, such as EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) in hot melts, acrylic polymers in pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and bisphenol A epoxy resin in structural adhesives; tackifiers, waxes, curing agents and additives tune them. The pages fall into 15 raw-material families. Annex VI entries named below include rosin, liquid bisphenol A epoxy resin and the diisocyanates MDI, TDI, HDI and IPDI, while hydrocarbon tackifier resins have no Annex VI entry. Two identity traps recur: SBS and SBR share one CAS number, and so do EVA and VAE.

Sources and checks: identities and hazard classifications are read at ECHA and the issuing regulator, standards at the body that publishes them, and grade values at the data sheet named next to them; methodology and fact-checking explains each step.

Class pages list their member CAS numbers themselves, so a class row shows only an example or a lead record. The list has no hazard column, because not every row has a verified hazard line yet; regulatory status follows by instrument below.

How Raw Materials Become Substance Pages: Selection Logic#

A raw material gets its own substance page when it is a CAS-defined substance or a defined substance class with its own function in adhesives; product forms and single grades stay inside existing pages. Tackifier dispersions, for example, are a product form rather than a CAS-defined substance, so they remain a section of the tackifier resin hub. Glycerol, pentaerythritol and hydrogenated rosin esters share one page and one function. Grade numbers serve as page names only where buyers search the substance by them, as with antioxidants 1010, 1076 and 168 and photoinitiators 184 and 1173.

The list holds 119 distinct entities, because the hydrocarbon resin page is an overview of the C5, C9, C5/C9, DCPD and hydrogenated types that also have pages of their own. How raw materials compare inside one family is explained under adhesive raw materials.

What Each Substance Page Records#

Every substance page records its identity, its function in adhesives, the grade properties of its family, loadings with their basis, its hazard line and regulatory status, and sourcing notes. The grade properties differ by family, as the table below shows.

Family Grade properties shown on its substance pages
--- ---
Tackifier resins ring-and-ball softening point, Mz/Mw, MMAP/DACP cloud point, Gardner/Saybolt color, aromaticity
Base polymers VA content and melt index (EVA), styrene and diblock content (SBC), viscosity at 190 °C (374 °F) (APAO), Tg, MFFT and solids (dispersions), Mooney viscosity (rubbers)
Thermoset resins EEW, viscosity at 25 °C (77 °F), F/U molar ratio (UF), solids, gel time
Curing agents AHEW, amine value, viscosity, pot life
Isocyanates and polyols NCO %, functionality, OH number, residual monomer
Monomers homopolymer Tg, inhibitor ppm, purity
Photoinitiators absorption maxima, Norrish type
Plasticizers and oils viscosity, aromatic content (CA %), pour point
Waxes congealing or drop point, needle penetration, viscosity
Antioxidants molecular weight, melting point, phenolic vs phosphite
Silanes functional group, alkoxy type, molecular weight
Fillers particle size, BET, surface treatment, oil absorption

Grade values on these pages are typical values of named grades, each given with its producer and data sheet date. A class requirement, such as a classification threshold, is never mixed with a grade value.

CAS Numbers, Polymers, UVCB Substances and Classes in the List#

The CAS column shows one CAS number for mono-constituent substances, the main CAS number plus "and others" for polymer and UVCB families, and an identity type where no single CAS number exists. Acrylic polymers, polyurethane dispersions and silyl-terminated polymers are polymer classes without a single CAS number, while anhydride hardeners and imidazoles are substance classes. Class pages keyed by a lead record show that member's number, such as DBTDL (dibutyltin dilaurate, 77-58-7) for catalysts. Animal glue has no ECHA entry of its own and appears under 9000-70-8, the ECHA entry for gelatins.

ECHA list numbers are not EC numbers. Six identities in the list carry a list number instead of an EC number: EVA 607-457-0, SIS 607-504-5, PVAc (polyvinyl acetate) 618-358-7, PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol) 618-340-9, urea-formaldehyde resin 618-464-3 and C5 resin 608-001-3.

Shared CAS Numbers and Abbreviation Clashes Between Substances#

SBS and SBR share CAS 9003-55-8, so the number never distinguishes a block copolymer from a random copolymer; EVA and VAE share 24937-78-8 and are separated by product form. Six clashes are resolved the same way on every page.

  • SBS and SBR: the page name, not the CAS number, separates block from random copolymer.
  • EVA and VAE: one CAS number; the EVA page covers hot melt copolymers, the VAE page the emulsions.
  • PDMS: CAS 63148-62-9 is both the silicone polymer record and the defoamer lead record.
  • "PVA": always written PVAc (polyvinyl acetate) or PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol), never bare.
  • DCPD resin (dicyclopentadiene resin): the abbreviation also names the monomer, and CAS 68132-00-3 is the hydrogenated resin type.
  • AMS resin (alpha-methylstyrene resin): the abbreviation also names the monomer alpha-methylstyrene.

Regulatory Status Across Adhesive Substances#

Regulatory status across adhesive substances comes from five instruments, CLP Annex VI, the REACH Candidate List, REACH Annex XIV and Annex XVII, and 21 CFR 175.105 in the US, and the table below names the listed substances under each. Rosin (CAS 8050-09-7) carries CLP Annex VI 650-015-00-7 Skin Sens. 1 H317. Every substance page writes its hazard line by one rule: the Annex VI entry with its index number, or "no Annex VI entry" with the majority ECHA C&L notified classification and its percentage.

The table below compares the instruments by the substances in the list that each one names.

Instrument Substances named Owner page
CLP Annex VI entry (index number) rosin 650-015-00-7; liquid bisphenol A epoxy resin 603-074-00-8; 4,4'-MDI 615-005-00-9; TDI 615-006-00-4; HDI 615-011-00-1; IPDI 615-008-00-5 (replaced by ATP23 from 2027-02-01); ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate 607-236-00-9; n-hexane 601-037-00-0 (as replaced by ATP22, applicable from 2026-05-01); DBP 607-318-00-4; DMPT 612-296-00-4 (ATP21, applicable from 2025-09-01); borax 005-011-00-4 hazard labeling for adhesives
No Annex VI entry C5, C9, C5/C9, DCPD and hydrogenated hydrocarbon resins, coumarone-indene resin; pMDI (CAS 9016-87-9)
REACH Candidate List (SVHC) n-hexane since 2026-02-04; DBP, BBP and DEHP since 2008-10-28; borax, through the entry disodium tetraborate, anhydrous (EC 215-540-4), since 2010-06-18; TPO since 2023-06-14 REACH restrictions and SVHCs in adhesives
REACH Annex XIV DBP, entry 6 (see the Candidate List row)
REACH Annex XVII entry 74: MDI, TDI, HDI and IPDI as diisocyanates; entry 51: DBP, DIBP, BBP and DEHP; entry 30, Appendix 6: borax diisocyanates in adhesives
US 21 CFR 175.105(c)(5) hydrocarbon (petroleum) resins, coumarone-indene resin, rosin and modified rosins, terpene resins food-contact adhesives

The "no Annex VI entry" row does not mean unclassified: those pages give the majority ECHA C&L notified classification. Dated entries, such as IPDI, n-hexane and DMPT (N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine), carry the date from which each version applies. A substance missing from the table has its status on its own page. The instruments behind these regulatory flags are summarized under adhesive regulations.

How the Substance List Connects to Adhesive Chemistries#

Each substance in the list serves one or more adhesive chemistries, and its substance page names the 2 to 4 chemistries that use it, such as EVA in hot melts or MDI in polyurethane adhesives.

Grouped by chemistry, the types of adhesives each draw on a different part of the list. Dicyandiamide serves as the latent curing agent of one-component epoxy adhesives, and ethyl cyanoacrylate is the base monomer of cyanoacrylate adhesives. The chemistries themselves are compared under types of adhesives by chemistry.

Matching a Listed Substance to an Adhesive Supplier#

A formulator who knows the substances a bond needs can describe substrates, process and volume once and reach independent adhesive suppliers and custom formulators.

Each request is passed straight to independent companies of that trade, and no company pays AdhesiveAdditives.com to be named or to receive requests; the editorial policy explains how.
